I succeeded at moving to Vancouver! A bit of culture shock. (Feel free to come up with a joke about moving out of a mutable reference or something.) I'm only here for less than three months, so I'm trying to absorb as much of Graydon's knowledge as possible in the meantime.

Continuing to work on the typechecker refactoring (yes, still); running up against very frustrating sporadic segfaults that I'm pretty sure are not to do with my changes, and that's about the most frustrating thing that can happen.

I also started working on rustpkg to finish up the work that our valiant volunteer Zack started. So far, trying to get rustpkg to build rust-sdl. Since rust-sdl requires some custom build logic -- currently implemented in a Makefile -- to rename the library file on Macs, I figured that might be a good starting point for porting that into build logic implemented in Rust that rustpkg can run. Or not; I still don't really know what I'm doing yet.

Figured I'd prioritize resuming regular posting ahead of making informative postings ;-)

Welcome to town! Now that you're here I'm fleeing to California to maintain equilibrium.

(but I'll be back next week, let's totally have dinner. :) )

Yes, the 24th. Or if you'll be in Seattle, a Thursday would work if you don't mind having a toddler come along.

I'll be lazy and pick Foundation, a vegetarian place near my house and a not too far bike from yours - Main at 8th Ave.

Suggestions for other vegetarian places for you to check out while you're in town:

the Naam (quite a bit west, in Kitsilano) - iconic hippie 24 hour vegetarian place that's been there forever and whose staff are extremely forgetful stoners. Their miso gravy is amazing.

Sweet Cherubim, on Commercial drive at... napier I think? I've never done the sit down restaurant part, but I love their take-out samosas. The attached store of the same name has good vegetarian staples, that's where I used to buy bulk nutritional yeast when I was vegan lo these many years ago.

Whole Vegetarian Restaurant - buddhist vegetarian chinese food, Main at 14th. Actual buddhist monks sometimes sitting at the next table.

Bandidas Taqueria - vegetarian mexican - commercial between 11th & 12th

T&T supermarket - one near Stadium Skytrain close to your work, one at 1st & Renfrew that's not a bad bike ride - not a restaurant, but they have a big, cheap selection of tofu, seitan/soybean curd/misc fakemeats, vegetarian frozen dim sum, etc. Though I'm sure that living on the drive you are not experiencing a tofu shortage.

Totally not close at all and inconvenient on transit: Paradise Vegetarian Noodle House in Burnaby. Vegan vietnamese food. Very, very tasty. There's a TV in the corner constantly playing propaganda about a weird Supreme Leader vegetarian cult, which I think Juli has blogged about? It's a chain and this is one of the few cult franchise locations outside of California. They seem like very harmless cultists and the food is excellent. (This is in the suburban minimall where my pharmacy is, which is how I know about it at all.)

There's some place in Portland (on Burnside? [personal profile] tim might remember) that also has a cult. I wonder if it's the same cult.
