This is perhaps an extreme suggestion, but what about moving away from the Bay Area entirely and living in, oh, say, a university town in the Midwest? Mozilla's generally amenable to people working remotely, and your rent would be way less. You could try it for a year. It couldn't be worse than the 'burbs, could it?
