Well, spite is one of the main reasons why I went to do a Ph.D the second time after getting kicked out of Berkeley the first time. I wanted to show I could do it. Turns out the reason I can't has nothing to do with me and everything to do with systematic oppression.
I can't say I was wrong for going back the second time for those reasons, either. I couldn't predict what was going to happen, and simply didn't have enough information about the people in question to know how they would react in a situation where they would have to take a stand. I guess there's really no way to find that out about a person until that situation happens.
