Real scientists writing real articles have actually been known to characterize "being attracted to males" as a trait characteristic of being female, and vice versa, in the literature on intersex. And yes, within the past 50 years. It blows my mind.
There's a fascinating discussion to be had on why people are so enamored of, and such essentialists with respect to, orientation categories like "attracted to men", and not equally enamored of categories like "attracted to younger women" or "attracted to anyone who gives blowjobs". But it's tangential to this one at best :-)
