Meta-

I'm noticing the interesting feature that Gmail threads all Dreamwidth comments in a single thread, not just all comments on a single post, as with LJ. I don't know whether to blame Gmail or Dreamwidth for that.

Anyway, a poll that is not actually a poll: HYPOTHETICALLY, would you be offended if somebody granted you access but didn't subscribe?

Dreamwidth has said that that's a known issue and that they're working on it. Or, at least, I think they said that. I'm too lazy to find a link.

I wouldn't be offended, but I don't offend that easily.

Yes, they have stated that. It's listed on the Known issues at Support.

Not offended, it's the reason for the separated systems.

Funny, I have the same problem with LJ threads and Gmail, although I don't know if that's attributable to only having an OpenID account. (I didn't receive comment notifications back when I had a regular account.)

As for the not-poll, it would depend if I considered them a friend or not (i.e., someone who I thought should have a sustained interest in knowing what's going on with me / my life). I generally consider both mutual trust ('access') and mutual interest ('subscription') pretty important to the continuation of a friendship, online or off...

People what have looked into this sort of thing are fairly certain that Gmail have special-cased LiveJournal so that even though the LJ and DW comment emails have all the same metadata, they get handled differently.

I think there's an item in our zilla somewhere about trying to get things to work right, but I'm not sure what the current status on it is.
