Making an edit with a dismissive footnote without acknowledging the comment it's in response to can be seen as a conversational act. In a context like this, so can responding with an edit to one point while not responding to another. You are, of course, free to act as you choose and to duck out as you need - but there are certainly politer ways to handle a situation like this.
