Yeah, grad school in the physical sciences seems particularly exploitive. I think a lot of people start grad school not realizing that the system exists to take advantage of their cheap labor and their naïve assumption that they're going to get something valuable out of the experience. A few people do, but a lot of people end up finding out that the promised jobs aren't there. And having the satisfaction of being able to pursue one's research interests for several years is nice, but you can't eat it or use it to pay rent later. I'm just talking about the ones who make it through, too!

It's almost like capitalism is about unfairly appropriating the work that labor does for the benefit of the undeserving, or something...
