It's true that a lot of these reasons can be compensated for with institutional support -- but also that many institutions don't provide that support, thus creating prime conditions for failure.
Maybe lists like the original one are lists of what the author thinks they really *should* have done in grad school -- idealizing this supposedly monk-like life which is supposed to be the idea one for a scholar, even though they succeeded anyway.
