Maybe "Assume good faith until given evidence otherwise," and if someone or some group isn't acting in good faith on topic X, don't assume they are on Y or Z either.

Also, if they really think (say) that Trump doesn't want to create a Muslim registry, what is lost by an individual or company publicly opposing such a registry? That's not even justifying voting for the fascist because they didn't think he was really a fascist, it's saying "since he might not be a fascist, I'm not going to say that I don't want him to do fascist things."

ETA: In other words, Trump and a lot of other right-wingers have long since lost the benefit of that assumption.
